Vermont 50 Race Weekend Saturday

Race weekend Saturdays are for our Race Families and Friends

We love race weekend Saturdays. We get to renew old friendships, get our faces painted, watch the children bike and fun run races and we get to drink chocolate milk and eat ice cream! Hello-how much fun is that!

What do you love about race weekend Saturday.

Vermont 50 proudly supports Vermont Adaptive. In our 28 years, we have raised over 2 million dollars to help support this organization.

There are two options to help support Vermont Adaptive during this COVID-19 pandemic

Option 1: We are asking people to raise (or donate) $500 before December 31, 2020 using the link I will provide to you and you will receive:

● one free race entry for the 2021 race
● lunch for 4 at our post race BBQ
● one commemorative t-shirt-made specifically for our fundraisers

Remember this fundraising option will close on December 31, 2020. For more info contact Race Director, Mike

Option two: commit to raise a minimum $500 before September 7, 2021 at noon ET, you can avoid our race open registration rush on May 25th and will be entered into the race by the Race Director.
Your $500 must be received by Sept. 7, 2021 or you will not be able to race with us on the last Sunday of September.

You must contact the Race Director, Mike before May 25 at 7 p.m. if you’d like to choose this option.

Ascutney Outdoors is Looking for Volunteers, Can You Help Out?

Volunteers Wanted

Ascutney Outdoors is looking for VOLUNTEERS!

They are excited about the progress they have made on a number of projects at Mount Ascutney. Exterior construction of the AOC is nearing completion, the tubing center (formerly known as the warming hut) has been set in its new location, and they are getting ready for a summer filled with great events!

Ascutney Outdoors Center

Interior painting . Interior trim. Installation of porch ceiling and trim. Build storage units for basement and main floor. Install kitchen

Install counter and cabinets on main floor. Re-locate deck from warming hut. Prep concrete for new rubber floor

Tubing Center

Paint exterior . Stain new interior walls . Construct lattice screen around port-a-potty . Motor Room. Paint Exterior

East Chair Building

Repair. Add support to roof . Paint. Move fencing and misc. items from maintenance shop to East Chair building

T-Bar Prep

Scraping and painting all T-Bar components prior to installation, Inventory, inspect all sheave train and rebuild as required, Remove T-bar grips for testing

Repair Millers Mile & 42nd Street washouts—AO will have heavy equipment on site for an experienced operator, Check all drainage structures and erosion control from top of T-bar down, Remove downed trees and limbs from ski trails and work roads, Remove former snowmaking valve houses, “Green-up” entire area inc. parking lot

Please bring work gloves, trail clearing tools (loppers, weed-whackers, chainsaws etc), paint brushes and any other tools that you think will help.

If you can’t make it on the work day but wish to help out, they welcome homemade goodies and refreshments for the volunteers!

On behalf of the Vermont 50 Race Committee and ALL our landowners and volunteers-WELCOME

You’ve probably heard by now that we lost an integral member, a family member, of our race. Lou Schmertz (fourth from right) passed earlier this week. He was one of the original mountain bikers and has been guiding us over these many years. If you have attended our race in the past, you may have met him at the information table, out on the course where he served as course marshal with Art Keating, out marking trails, or just bopping around in his Jeep with his dogs.

We’ll go on this weekend because he’d want us to! We hope you’ll join us in honoring his memory on Sunday before our 50 mile and 50 km race starts with a moment of silence for the big man, for Lou-ster.

“It’s all happening.” One week from Today the 25th Annual Vermont 50

In one week we’ll be hosting our 25th Annual Vermont 50 Mountain Bike or Ultra-run. “It’s all happening.”

Mandatory 50 Mile Racer Check-in Opens.
Parking is at the Ascutney Mountain Base Lodge, one way in/one way out road. THERE WILL BE TRAFFIC, Please plan ahead and leave plenty of time. Follow the signs to the designated parking area. Please DO NOT park where it is signed DO NOT PARK and please obey the Volunteer Parking Attendants.

50 Mile pre-race meeting is at 5:30 am SHARP. You must check in the morning of the race to participate.

If you start in a wave ahead of your designated wave/category/age group, your start time will be moved back to the wave time you were classified in and an additional 20 minutes will be added to your finishing time. Your time starts when the chip in your Bib/Plaque crosses the timing mat.

The race cut off time for everyone is 6:30 p.m.

Mandatory 50 Km Race check-in and Pre-Race Meeting at 7:30 a.m.

Pacer Van runs from Cunningham’s Parking lot (The Big Tent) to Aid Station #9 Stone’s from: 9 am until about 4 pm every 45 minutes. If a Pacer was not registered on Saturday, they can pick up their Pacer Bib in the Van before being transported to Aid Station #9 Stone’s to meet their runner.

Official Race Merchandise Table Open. For online pick up and race weekend retail sales. We accept cash, checks and most major credit cards.

YOGA Stretch and Recover Yoga at the finish line – Flyway Yoga will be on-site to help racers stretch out and answer questions about how to stay limber after the race. Open to racers, families, crew, and Ascutney community. Read more and sign up with Flyway Yoga.

This meal is NOT self served and is NOT all-you-can-eat. This food is provided to feed our race participants, volunteers and landowners. Thank you for your cooperation.

Finish Line Massage

Sports therapy massage provided by Denise Gebroe and volunteers from the Vermont Chapter of AMTA. 7-10 tables will be available for 10-15 minutes of sports massage. This service is free but donations are greatly appreciated.

Drop Bags at the Vermont 50

The Bib lists are out, you can pack your drop bags now!

The Vermont 50, allows the use of drop bags, and we have volunteers gather, deliver and later return runner drop bags (only after the aid station closes.)

If you have items which you may need during the race, in order to ensure finishing, you can make up bags about the size of a small grocery bag for us to bring to Skunk Hollow, Greenall’s, and Johnson aid stations from the start (and Ralph’s for the 50 Km). These bags must be checked at the Information Table in the BIG TENT at Cunningham’s (Ascutney Mtn Resort) no later than 8 p.m. Saturday evening.

If it gets warmer while you are on course, you may shed items at any station except Garvin Hill and Cady Brook and volunteers will bring them back to the BIG TENT-as each aid station closes.

We do not guarantee they will be back before you may want to leave, and we WILL NOT MAIL ITEMS TO YOU. Nothing will be returned before a given station officially closes. This is a reminder to plan carefully, considering what you’ll be most likely to need, and keep your bag size limited.

Many of the bags we receive are TOO LARGE, making it very difficult for our hard-working volunteers who must transport them. Let me make this perfectly clear:
If your bag does not fit through a 9″ by 9″ opening or weighs more than 10 lbs. IT WILL NOT BE TRANSPORTED!!!

Drop Bags Requirements

Download a Drop Bag Info Sheet

A small backpack or gear bag, on the order of 9”x 9” x 16” is appropriate if shoes, a top garment and bottle are included.
Weight not to exceed 10 lbs per bag. We will weigh them!
Your bag must be soft-sided (no plastic storage boxes please)
Be securely closed
Labeled clearly with your name and most importantly your bib number
Also include the name of the aid station to avoid confusion by you or by us. Make your drop bag as unique a possible within our stated guidelines.

Drop bags are allowed at: Aid Stations #3, 7 and 10 for the 50 Mile and #2K, 7 and 10 for the 50 Km.
We will deliver drop bags from the start/BIG TENT to aid stations

Ralph’s #2K (50 Km Only)
Skunk Hollow #3
Greenall’s #7
Johnson’s #10

Be sure to label your bag with the name of the aid station you want it dropped at, your name and most importantly, your bib number.

Remember do not drop any clothing at: Garvin Hill or Cady Brook. You may drop clothing during the race at any other aid stations.

Drop bags must be accepted at the Information Table in the BIG TENT before 8 p.m. Saturday night.

Drop bags will be returned to the BIG TENT ONLY after each aid station closes, not before! You will have to wait at the BIG TENT to pick up your drop bags–we WILL NOT mail them to you!!

This is your property and it is your responsibility to pick up your bag at the BIG TENT at the end of the race.

NO BOXES, RUBBERMAID CONTAINERS, SUITCASES etc will be accepted as Drop Bags!!

What should I put into my drop bags?

Extra pair of shoes at the first drop station, if you think there’s a chance you may need to change. Most folks never do.
Clean, dry socks
Skin lube, band-aids; If you are prone to blisters include a small ‘kit’ in each bag (i.e. band-aids, sterile wipes, talcum powder)
Electrolyte caplets or dissolving tablets, if you use them
Gels or Blocks or Stingers Gels. Gels will not be provided at the aid stations
Non-liquid snacks if your system, due to allergies, cannot tolerate items provided at the aid stations
A light waterproof or resistant layer top and lightweight cap if there’s rain in the forecast (a small pouched poncho is perfect and takes up little space)
A light jacket and even lightweight gloves if the forecast is for cold weather
I challenge you to gather the above-listed items together to see exactly how small a volume they really occupy.

What NOT to include:
Anything that could break if dropped from a height of 4 feet.
No Glass Containers
wallets
cell phone (There’s no reception anyway)
purse
watches
GPS
jewelry, etc.
Don’t ever put anything in a drop bag that you aren’t prepared to part with permanently. We are not responsible for lost or stolen articles or drop bags left behind at the end of the race.

The following items can be carried in a small pouch by itself, or as part of a water belt, or a backpack:
band-aids in a small plastic baggie
electrolyte caplets and Advil, also in a baggie
gels or chews
Runners if you wear Race Ready Shorts, you can carry most of the above and even a few more gels in them. On a decent weather day therefore, you would have no need for drop bags.

Bikers can carry these items on their backs in their packs or in shirt pouches.
